ENDING SOUNDS
Some
non-native speakers have difficulty pronouncing consonant sounds at the end of
a word because words in their native language end with vowel or “open”
sounds. They are not used to “closing”
syllables off with a consonant sound.
In English we create plural nouns, possessives, and past tense verbs by
adding a consonant sound. As a result, by not pronouncing
ending sounds, non-native speakers omit plural, possessive, and past tense verb
endings. How important is it to
pronounce these endings? Very important.
English also has many words which end with two or three
consonant sounds (clusters).
Pronouncing these ending sounds is often hard.
