            SYLLABLES

What is a syllable?  It’s just a beat of sound energy.  Try tapping your fingers as you say these words:  “bye”--one tap, “hello”--two taps.  “Bye” has one syllable; “hello” has two syllables.

Some words look like they have more syllables than they actually do.  Learn to listen carefully to hear how many syllables are in a word.  Don’t be misled by the spelling.
